Bumping the Date Does Nothing: The 150-Word Monthly Practice Note
Summary
No. Changing a page's updated date with no change in the text gives an engine nothing to use: Google treats a byline date as an estimate of when a page was significantly updated, and Bing asks for lastmod only when the content changed. What works is a dated note of about 150 words, once a month: the current wait for a first visit, the days with openings, the states you see patients in, and one change. That is a first-hand fact no aggregator holds, under a true date.

Does changing the updated date help AI answers?
No. A date is a claim about the page, and both large engines describe checking it against the page. Google says its systems look at several factors to estimate when a page was published or significantly updated, and that no single date factor is relied on because each one can go wrong 1Ref 1Google Search Central (2025).Influence your byline dates in Google Search. That Google estimates a byline date from several factors as the time a page was published or significantly updated; that visible and structured dates must match; that other dates should be minimized and future dates avoided.. Bing asks that a sitemap's lastmod reflect the true last change to the content and never the time the sitemap was generated 2Ref 2Fabrice Canel and Krishna Madhavan, Principal Product Managers, Microsoft AI, Bing (2025).Keeping Content Discoverable with Sitemaps in AI Powered Search. That lastmod should change only when the page content changed and never on sitemap generation; that it is a key signal for what Bing recrawls; that changefreq and priority are ignored; that Bing typically checks a sitemap at least daily; and that sitemaps and IndexNow are complementary..
A bumped date with nothing behind it is the case both instructions exist to exclude. The instinct behind bumping comes from a real observation. Answer engines favor recent material on questions where recency matters, and a practice page that reads as two years old looks abandoned. But the date is the weakest way to look current, because it is the one signal that costs nothing to fake, and the engines wrote their guidance knowing that. The stronger way is to hold a fact that changed this month and to say it.
What the engines say a date is for
Google's guidance on byline dates asks for one clearly labeled visible date, a matching datePublished or dateModified in the page's structured data, and as few other dates on the page as possible 1Ref 1Google Search Central (2025).Influence your byline dates in Google Search. That Google estimates a byline date from several factors as the time a page was published or significantly updated; that visible and structured dates must match; that other dates should be minimized and future dates avoided.. The visible and structured values have to agree, and neither may be a future date or the date of something the page describes. Bing's sitemap guidance for AI-powered search treats lastmod as a key signal for deciding whether to recrawl a URL or skip it 2Ref 2Fabrice Canel and Krishna Madhavan, Principal Product Managers, Microsoft AI, Bing (2025).Keeping Content Discoverable with Sitemaps in AI Powered Search. That lastmod should change only when the page content changed and never on sitemap generation; that it is a key signal for what Bing recrawls; that changefreq and priority are ignored; that Bing typically checks a sitemap at least daily; and that sitemaps and IndexNow are complementary..
The same post says Bing ignores changefreq and priority, and that it typically revisits a submitted sitemap at least once a day 2Ref 2Fabrice Canel and Krishna Madhavan, Principal Product Managers, Microsoft AI, Bing (2025).Keeping Content Discoverable with Sitemaps in AI Powered Search. That lastmod should change only when the page content changed and never on sitemap generation; that it is a key signal for what Bing recrawls; that changefreq and priority are ignored; that Bing typically checks a sitemap at least daily; and that sitemaps and IndexNow are complementary.. Read together, the two documents describe a date as a promise: this page changed, come read it. A site builder that stamps today's date on every page at every build breaks that promise across the whole site at once. The crawler arrives, finds nothing new, and loses any way to tell that date from the one on the page that did change. The one setting worth finding this week is the builder or plugin option that writes dateModified automatically. Switch it to manual, or to a value taken from the page's own edit history, so the date moves only when text does.
What freshness means to Bing and Copilot
Bing publishes its ranking parameters, and freshness is one of them, defined in its own words as a page that consistently provides up-to-date information 3Ref 3Microsoft (2026).How Bing delivers search results.Bing's own definition of freshness as a page that consistently provides up-to-date information, and its origination-and-transparency parameter rating first-hand information higher.. The same page lists origination and transparency, and rates first-hand information above content that summarizes or republishes what others wrote. Bing's webmaster guidelines add that one crawling, indexing and ranking foundation serves Bing search, Copilot and grounding alike, and that content eligible for citation surfaces its key information early 4Ref 4Microsoft Bing Webmaster Tools (2026).Webmaster Guidelines - Bing Webmaster Tools. That one crawling, indexing and ranking foundation serves Bing search, Copilot and grounding; that citable content surfaces key information early; that automatically generated content at scale reduces grounding eligibility; and that impressions and citations, not only clicks, are what to monitor..
The wait for a first visit, the days with openings, and the states you are seeing patients in this month are first-hand facts a solo telehealth practice rarely publishes. No directory holds them, and they change on a schedule only you know. It is the one fact about the practice that exists nowhere but in your own words. A page that states it, dates it, and states it again next month is what Bing's definition of fresh describes.
The same guidelines name what reduces a page's eligibility for grounding: automatically generated content at scale, keyword stuffing, misleading structured data 4Ref 4Microsoft Bing Webmaster Tools (2026).Webmaster Guidelines - Bing Webmaster Tools. That one crawling, indexing and ranking foundation serves Bing search, Copilot and grounding; that citable content surfaces key information early; that automatically generated content at scale reduces grounding eligibility; and that impressions and citations, not only clicks, are what to monitor.. A monthly note written by the person who runs the calendar is the opposite shape, and it stays that shape only while a person reads it before it posts.
The 150-word monthly practice note
The note is four facts and a date, and it fits in about 150 words. It says how long a new patient waits for a first visit as of this month, which days currently have openings, which states you are seeing patients in, and one thing that changed since the last note. It carries a checked-on line with the real date.
| Line | What it states | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Wait | The current wait for a first visit, as a range | New patients are being scheduled about two weeks out. |
| Open days | The days with openings this month | Openings on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. |
| States | Where you are seeing patients this month | Seeing patients in Oregon and Washington. |
| One change | The single thing that changed since the last note | Evening slots added on Wednesdays. |
| Checked on | The date a person confirmed the four lines | Checked on 15 September 2026. |
Each line puts the fact first, in a sentence an engine can lift whole, the same shape as the answer capsules elsewhere on a practice site. On your own site it goes on a news or updates page as visible text, under its date, with that page's dateModified moved to match. As with the dated fee table on a fees page, a reader and a crawler both see when a person last confirmed the figure. If the wait question already has an answer on the faq page, change that answer the same day so the two never disagree. The note is the smallest content marketing a practice can run, one paragraph a month, and the only kind that carries a fact a reader can check against the calendar.
What to write when nothing changed
Write two lines that say so, with the date. A note that reads "Checked on 15 October. Wait, open days and states are unchanged from September" is a true fresh fact, and it is the one case where a moved date is earned, because a person checked. The temptation is to manufacture a change so the note looks busy. An invented change is the same fake the bumped date was, with more words around it.
Monthly is the cadence, and there is a reason it is monthly and no more often. Bing's guidance on when to notify search engines separates a material update to a page from high-frequency, low-value changes, and asks that the second kind be reported incrementally instead of on every event 5Ref 5Fabrice Canel, Principal Product Manager, Microsoft Bing (2024).IndexNow: When and How Websites Should Notify Search Engines. That new and materially updated pages warrant an IndexNow notification, and that high-frequency, low-value changes should be notified incrementally instead of on every event.. A wait time that moves by a day is the second kind. Save it for the note. If you are full, the note says so and names where a caller can go meanwhile, so the practice reads as full but findable. Give a reopening date only when you know it.
Telling the engines the note exists
A new note is a new URL or a materially updated page, and both are events Bing says warrant an IndexNow notification 5Ref 5Fabrice Canel, Principal Product Manager, Microsoft Bing (2024).IndexNow: When and How Websites Should Notify Search Engines. That new and materially updated pages warrant an IndexNow notification, and that high-frequency, low-value changes should be notified incrementally instead of on every event.. Submit the note's URL through IndexNow the day it posts, and let the sitemap's lastmod for the updates page move to the same date, since Bing describes sitemaps and IndexNow as complementary, one for coverage and the other for fast URL-level updates 2Ref 2Fabrice Canel and Krishna Madhavan, Principal Product Managers, Microsoft AI, Bing (2025).Keeping Content Discoverable with Sitemaps in AI Powered Search. That lastmod should change only when the page content changed and never on sitemap generation; that it is a key signal for what Bing recrawls; that changefreq and priority are ignored; that Bing typically checks a sitemap at least daily; and that sitemaps and IndexNow are complementary..

A month later, run the monthly prompt panel and write down whether the wait an engine quotes for you is this month's figure or last month's. That is the whole test.
The monthly routine, in the order it runs
Set one reminder for one day a month and do the five things below in order; the whole run takes less time than a session. The order matters because each step feeds the next: the facts come from the calendar, the note comes from the facts, the date comes from the note, and the announcement comes last, once there is something true to announce.
- Open the calendar and the licence list. Write the wait as of today, the days with openings, and the states.
- Name the one change, or write that nothing changed.
- Post the note on the updates page under its real date, and move dateModified on that page only.
- Submit the URL through IndexNow, and check that the sitemap's lastmod for the page moved with it.
- Update the same facts anywhere else they appear among the five sources an engine reads about a practice: the business listing, the directories, your own site's faq answer, and any claimed profile. The registry carries none of them.
The routine removes the one reason an engine had to distrust your dates, and hands it a fact each month that it can find nowhere else.
