Answer Capsules: Five 40-to-80-Word Answers Written to Be Lifted Whole
Summary
An answer an engine can lift whole is one 40-to-80-word paragraph that names the practice: the answer in sentence one, the number or the list in sentence two, the caveat in sentence three. Write five first: first-visit cost, insurance and self-pay, new-patient openings, in person or video and where, and how to start. Four go on the FAQ page and in the Business Profile in those words; the one-service capsule goes on that service's page, in the Business Profile service description and in every directory service field.

What shape does an answer need before an engine can lift it whole?
One paragraph that stands on its own. An answer capsule is a 40-to-80-word answer to one question a patient asks before booking, built in three sentences: the answer in the first, the number or the list in the second, the caveat in the third. It names the practice, so it still says who it is about after it has been copied out of the page. Nothing in it leans on a paragraph above it.
The word band is a writing rule of this article, and no engine publishes one. Google's own guide to its generative features says a site does not need to break content into pieces, write in a special way for AI, or add new files or markup; a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, because the AI features retrieve pages through the ordinary ranking systems and generate from what they retrieved 1Ref 1Google Search Central (2026).Google's Guide to Optimizing for Generative AI Features on Google Search.Google's statement that a page needs no chunking, AI-specific rewriting or special markup, that eligibility for generative AI features requires an indexed, snippet-eligible page, that structured data is not required for them, and that Business Profile details can surface in AI responses.. The work is the work a good FAQ page always needed.
But the questions have changed shape. Google's May 2025 note on succeeding in its AI experiences says users there ask longer and more specific questions, and follow-up questions after those 2Ref 2John Mueller, Google Search Relations (2025).Top ways to ensure your content performs well in Google's AI experiences on Search.Google's May 2025 note that users of its AI experiences ask longer, more specific and follow-up questions, and that restrictive nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet settings limit how content is featured there.. Pew Research Center found, in the March 2025 browsing records of 900 U.S. adults, that 8 percent of one- or two-word searches produced an AI summary and 53 percent of searches of ten words or more did, so the summaries cluster on the long, question-shaped searches 3Ref 3Athena Chapekis and Anna Lieb, Pew Research Center (2025).Google users are less likely to click on links when an AI summary appears in the results.Pew's March 2025 measurements: AI summaries appear far more often on long question-style searches (8 percent of one- or two-word searches against 53 percent of ten-word searches), and users with a summary clicked results on 8 percent of visits against 15 percent, and a link inside the summary on 1 percent.. A patient who types a whole question about your fee gets an answer assembled from passages, and a welcome paragraph that reaches the fee in its fourth sentence gives it nothing to take.
The three-sentence shape does the rest. Sentence one is the answer a stranger could repeat. Sentence two carries the number or the list. Sentence three is the caveat, a fact about the practice with a direction attached, so it travels with the answer instead of living in a footer the engine never quotes.
Which five questions get the first capsules?
The five questions a new patient asks before booking: what a first visit costs, whether the practice takes their insurance or is self-pay, whether it is accepting new patients, whether visits are in person or by video and where, and how to start. Every practice answers these somewhere, usually on a phone call the caller has to make first. The capsule puts each answer in one public paragraph, in the words patients use.
| Question | Sentence one: the answer | Sentence two: the number or the list | Sentence three: the caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost of a first visit | [Practice] charges a flat fee for a first visit. | The first visit is [amount] for [length] minutes. | Fees change only on the date printed on the fee table. |
| Insurance and self-pay | [Practice] is in network with [plans] and takes self-pay patients. | Self-pay visits are [amount]. | Plan participation is checked monthly; confirm yours when booking. |
| Accepting new patients | [Practice] is accepting new patients as of [month year]. | A first visit is offered within [n] weeks. | Openings change weekly and the date is updated when they do. |
| In person or video, and where | [Practice] sees patients at [address] and by video. | Video visits are available in [states]. | The patient must be in one of those states during the visit. |
| How to start | New patients start by [the exact first step]. | The intake form takes about [n] minutes. | A first visit is confirmed once the form is received. |
The number in the fee capsule is the number on the dated fee table, changed on the same day, because a capsule that drifts from the table is the version an engine may keep quoting after the table moves on. Keep the fee statement consistent with the self-pay disclosures the practice already posts, and read the licensing board's advertising rules against it before it goes public. Every bracket in the table is a fact the practice already states somewhere.
Where does each capsule have to appear?
In three places for the one service the practice most wants to be the answer for: the page on its own site that describes that service, the service description on its Google Business Profile, and the service field of every directory listing it keeps. The other four capsules go on the FAQ page of the site and, in the same words, into the Business Profile services fields. One wording, everywhere it appears.
The site page comes first because it is the one address the practice controls. On the five-page website this cluster describes, the service page and the FAQ page are two of the five, so the capsules have a home before any directory. The capsule sits there as visible text, since an image holds no text an engine can read and a PDF lives at its own address. An answer that opens on a click is fine when the words are already in the page's HTML; when they load after the click, check the page source, or ask your web person. Google's preview controls, nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet, limit how content is featured in its AI experiences when set restrictively 2Ref 2John Mueller, Google Search Relations (2025).Top ways to ensure your content performs well in Google's AI experiences on Search.Google's May 2025 note that users of its AI experiences ask longer, more specific and follow-up questions, and that restrictive nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet settings limit how content is featured there., so a template that ships with a snippet limit on is worth one look in the page head.
The Business Profile carries the same words. Google states that Business Profile details can surface in AI responses 1Ref 1Google Search Central (2026).Google's Guide to Optimizing for Generative AI Features on Google Search.Google's statement that a page needs no chunking, AI-specific rewriting or special markup, that eligibility for generative AI features requires an indexed, snippet-eligible page, that structured data is not required for them, and that Business Profile details can surface in AI responses., and the profile's own fields hold the capsule: the business description takes at most 750 characters, no URLs or HTML, and Google asks that it focus on the business rather than prices or promotions; the services editor, marked limited availability, holds each service with its price; and the Q&A section, where owners answer questions, is open to select categories and regions 4Ref 4Google (2026).Edit your Business Profile. The Business Profile fields a capsule can occupy and their limits: a 750-character description with no URLs or HTML, the services editor, and the Q&A section available for select categories and regions.. So the description takes one capsule and a line of address, in the site's words to the letter, and the fee goes in the services editor where the profile offers one.
A directory copy can outrun the original: the Tow Center's March 2025 test of eight AI search tools found them on some occasions citing syndicated or copied versions of a page instead of the original 5Ref 5Klaudia Jaźwińska and Aisvarya Chandrasekar, Tow Center for Digital Journalism (2025).AI Search Has a Citation Problem. The Tow Center's March 2025 finding that AI search tools on some occasions cited syndicated or copied versions of a page instead of the original.. A capsule that names the practice loses nothing when a directory's copy is the one quoted. A capsule that says "we" and "our office" loses the practice.
Does FAQ markup still matter?
Less than it did, and it is never the first job. Since August 2023 Google has shown FAQ rich results only for well-known, authoritative government and health websites, and its guide to generative AI features says structured data is not required for them. Markup that mirrors visible text does no harm. Markup written before the visible text exists is the wrong order.
The August 2023 post from John Mueller of Google Search Relations says FAQ rich results would no longer be shown regularly for other sites, that existing FAQPage markup need not be removed because unused structured data causes no problems, and that the change is not a ranking change 6Ref 6John Mueller, Search Advocate, Google Switzerland (2023).Changes to HowTo and FAQ rich results.Google's August 2023 change limiting FAQ rich results to well-known government and health websites, with no need to remove existing FAQPage markup and no ranking effect.. Google's generative AI guide says the same from the other direction: no special schema.org markup is needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode 1Ref 1Google Search Central (2026).Google's Guide to Optimizing for Generative AI Features on Google Search.Google's statement that a page needs no chunking, AI-specific rewriting or special markup, that eligibility for generative AI features requires an indexed, snippet-eligible page, that structured data is not required for them, and that Business Profile details can surface in AI responses..
If the site already carries markup, the general structured data rules apply: it must describe content visible to readers of the page, it must not be misleading, and a violation can draw a manual action that removes rich-result eligibility 7Ref 7Google Search Central (2026).General Structured Data Guidelines. The rule that structured data must describe content visible to readers of the page and must not be misleading, and that a violation can draw a manual action removing rich-result eligibility.. So the answer text inside any FAQPage block is a copy of the capsule, changed on the day the capsule changes.
Read each capsule out of context before it goes public
Paste the capsule into a blank document and read it as a stranger. It passes if it still names the practice, still answers the question in its first sentence, and still makes sense with nothing above it. It fails if it says "we" without saying who, if the number lives on another page, or if the caveat has been squeezed into the middle of the answer.
Being cited and being visited are different events. In Pew's data, users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result on 8 percent of visits, against 15 percent without one 3Ref 3Athena Chapekis and Anna Lieb, Pew Research Center (2025).Google users are less likely to click on links when an AI summary appears in the results.Pew's March 2025 measurements: AI summaries appear far more often on long question-style searches (8 percent of one- or two-word searches against 53 percent of ten-word searches), and users with a summary clicked results on 8 percent of visits against 15 percent, and a link inside the summary on 1 percent.. Most people who meet the capsule meet it inside someone else's answer and never open the page, so it carries the practice's name and the first step to book.
Gale publishes a provider's approved capsules on the gale.care page as plain text and announces that page through IndexNow on the day one of them changes. On the practice's own site the capsule goes live after the read-alone test, approved by the clinician whose name is on it.
Keep the capsules true after the facts behind them change
A capsule is only as good as the fact behind it, and the facts behind these five change: a fee on its dated schedule, a plan dropped, a waitlist opened, a state added to the video list. The monthly practice note is where each change gets written down, and each entry names the capsule it touches. A capsule that outlives its fact is a wrong answer with the practice's name on it.
The monthly prompt panel, the fixed set of questions typed into the answer engines on the same day each month, shows which capsule an engine is lifting and in what words, and a stale number surfaces there first. And each of the five sources the plan reads from is checked against the others whenever one changes, so a fee on the FAQ page and a fee in a directory field disagree for no longer than a month. Questions patients keep asking that have no capsule yet go on a saved list; a weekly routine drafts the oldest into the review pen, with a coach score, for the morning read. The first capsule can exist within the hour: take the fee question, write the three sentences from today's fee table, and read it alone.
