SEO for occupational therapists
Summary
Most of what makes an occupational therapy practice findable is free, one-time, and dull: a profile Google's own rules let you hold without publishing your home address, a federal record that agrees with your website, and one page that answers what callers and referrers actually ask. What makes this field different is the word in your own name. Families search for hand therapy, sensory, feeding, handwriting and falls — almost never for occupational therapy.

The playbook
- 1.
Work out which address Google will let you claim
Occupational therapy mostly happens in rooms that belong to somebody else: a client's kitchen, a school corridor, a pool, a gym, a ward, an employer's floor. Google's eligibility rules decide what you may claim. A business has to make in-person contact with customers during the hours it posts; a post-office box or a remote mailbox address is not allowed; and an ongoing service, class or meeting at a location you do not own or have authority to represent is not eligible for a profile of its own; only the owner or an authorised representative may confirm and manage one 1Ref 1Source (2026).Business eligibility and ownership guidelines.Google's eligibility rules for a Business Profile: a business must make in-person contact with customers during its stated hours; a post-office box or remote mailbox address is not permitted; an ongoing service, class or meeting at a location the business does not own or have authority to represent is ineligible; and only business owners or their authorised representatives may verify and manage the profile.. So the handwriting group you run inside a school is not a second listing. If you travel to people instead of seating them in your own waiting room, the form to use is the one for a business that serves an area, and the policy's own answer there is to keep the street address hidden 2Ref 2Source (2026).Guidelines for representing your business on Google.Google's product policy for which address must be entered, when a business counts as one that serves an area rather than holding a storefront, and Google's instruction to hide the street address of a business that serves an area..
- 2.
Fix the word in your own name first
No other profession is this badly served by its own title. People who type "occupational" are often looking for workplace injury, fitness-for-duty exams or occupational medicine, and the listing categories offered to you by directories make the same mistake. Meanwhile the people you actually treat type the task: buttoning a shirt, handwriting, picking up a fork, getting back behind the wheel, not falling in the bathroom, a toddler who will not eat. Put those plain phrases in your headings and body text, keep the credential where it identifies you, and check what category each listing has filed you under. Google's own account of local results names relevance to the search as one of three factors, with distance and prominence, and says a complete and accurate listing is more likely to appear 3Ref 3Source (2026).Tips to improve your local ranking on Google.Google's own description of how local results are ordered: by relevance to the search, distance from the searcher, and prominence; that there is no way to request or pay for a better place in local results; and that a business with complete and accurate information is more likely to appear.. A listing filed under the wrong field is neither.
- 3.
Reconcile the federal record you probably have not looked at
Most occupational therapists were somebody's employee for years before they were a practice, and the record usually shows it: an old hospital or school district address, a specialty classification a credentialing clerk picked in 2014, a middle initial that appears nowhere else. Anyone can read that record free in the public registry, including the specialty classification and the practice address as enumerated 4Ref 4Source (2026).NPI Registry (public provider record lookup). That the public registry is the free lookup of any clinician's federal provider record, including the specialty classification and the practice address as enumerated.. Reconcile it before you touch a website, because it is the record other systems copy. Each place it disagrees with your site splits you into two practitioners that nothing has a reason to merge, and merging them again costs nothing but an afternoon.
- 4.
Write the page a referrer reads, not only the one a patient reads
Half the people opening your site are not the patient. A discharge planner, a case manager, a school team, a surgeon's office and a parent who was handed your name all want four facts in the first screen: what ages you see, what you treat, where you see people (clinic, home, school, facility), and which plans you work with. Add how soon somebody can be seen. For outpatient therapy Medicare covers, the shape of the answer is already in your paperwork: the written plan of care has to carry the diagnoses, the long-term goals, and the type, amount, duration and frequency of therapy, and the initial certification covers the plan or 90 calendar days, whichever is less, with recertification expected at least every 90 days 5Ref 5Source (2026).Medicare Benefit Policy Manual, Chapter 15, sections 220.1.2 and 220.1.3 — plans of care and certification for outpatient physical, occupational and speech-language therapy. What a written plan of care must contain at minimum for Medicare-covered outpatient therapy (diagnoses, long-term treatment goals, and the type, amount, duration and frequency of therapy) and the certification cadence: the initial certification covers the plan or 90 calendar days, whichever is less, with recertification expected at least every 90 days.. A page that answers "how often, for how long, starting when" is doing the referrer's job for them.
- 5.
Make your own site usable by the people you treat
This is the one most generic advice never reaches, and for this profession it is close to embarrassing to get wrong. Your readers include people with low vision, a tremor, one working hand, memory changes after a stroke, and parents filling a form single-handed. The accessibility standard organises its requirements under four principles — perceivable, operable, understandable, robust — puts the text-alternative requirement for all non-text content at its lowest conformance level, and in version 2.2 added criteria named Target Size (Minimum) and Focus Not Obscured (Minimum) at the middle level 6Ref 6Source (2026).Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2.The standard's own text: that web accessibility rests on four principles — perceivable, operable, understandable and robust; that the non-text content criterion (Level A) requires all non-text content presented to the user to have a text alternative serving the equivalent purpose; and that version 2.2 added criteria including Target Size (Minimum) and Focus Not Obscured (Minimum), both at Level AA. Re-fetched and read on 2026-11-03 because the registry's own liveness check had been refused by the host.. Separately, a private health care office is a place of public accommodation under the civil-rights statute, where effective communication and physical access obligations live 7Ref 7Source (2026).The Americans with Disabilities Act.That a private health care office is a place of public accommodation under Title III, where effective communication, physical access and web accessibility guidance sit.. Try your own site with the keyboard alone, at large text, one-handed. A practice that assesses other people's environments for a living should not ship a form nobody can tab through.
- 6.
Treat reviews as a rule problem, not a persuasion problem
The person who could write your review is often not the patient: it is a parent, an adult child, a spouse. The rules still land on you. Google's content policy for profiles prohibits a review bought with money or with anything else of value, bars incentives such as discounts or free services, requires content to reflect a genuine experience, prohibits a review arising from a conflict of interest, and rules out review requests put to customers who are standing in your clinic 8Ref 8Source (2026).Prohibited and restricted content (Maps user-generated content policy).Google's content policy for reviews, photos and questions on a profile: reviews paid for directly or in kind are prohibited; a merchant may not offer incentives such as payment, discounts or free goods or services for reviews; content must reflect a genuine experience; reviews arising from a conflict of interest are prohibited; and soliciting reviews from customers while they are on the premises is disallowed. — so the tablet by the front desk of a children's clinic is out. The consumer-protection reading is narrower than people assume: you may routinely ask every customer for a review, incentives are allowed only when nothing requires a particular sentiment, and paying for five-star reviews breaks the rule even if you disclose it 9Ref 9Source (2026).The Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule: Questions and Answers. The Federal Trade Commission's own plain-language reading of its rule: a business may routinely ask every purchaser for a review; incentives for reviews are allowed only where there is no express or implied requirement of a particular sentiment; and paying for five-star reviews violates the rule even when it is disclosed.. Reply to public comment in general terms and never confirm that anyone was a patient.
- 7.
Describe the practice once in a form machines can read
One pass, no retainer. Google's local-business markup is valid with two things in it, a name and a postal address; the phone number, web address, location detail and opening hours are recommended on top; you are told to pick the most specific business subtype there is; and the review and rating properties belong to sites that carry reviews of other businesses rather than of themselves 10Ref 10Source (2026).Local Business structured data. That the only required properties of local-business markup are the name and the postal address; that the telephone number, web address, location detail and opening hours are recommended; that Google says to use the most specific business subtype available; and that review and rating properties are for sites capturing reviews about other businesses.. Leave star ratings off your own pages altogether — eligibility for them disappears as soon as the reviewed business is the one in charge of the reviews, and that includes stars arriving through a bolted-on widget 11Ref 11Source (2026).Review snippet structured data. That a page is not eligible for a star review snippet when the entity being reviewed controls the reviews about itself, whether the markup is placed directly or arrives through an embedded third-party reviews widget.. If you run both a clinic and a home-visiting caseload, let the clinic be the place with the address and say the rest in sentences.

What not to buy — patterns to avoid, never companies
A page for every town inside an hour's drive: Google's spam policies name content made mainly to manipulate positions rather than to help people, and pages built to surface for many similar searches, as practices that can cost you position or get you removed 12Ref 12Source (2026).Spam Policies for Google Web Search.Google's spam policies, including the definition of scaled content abuse as many pages generated for the primary purpose of manipulating search positions rather than helping people, and doorway abuse as pages created to surface for many similar searches; and that such practices can lower a site's position or remove it from results.. A promise about where you will appear: Google says plainly that there is no way to request or pay for a better place in local results 3Ref 3Source (2026).Tips to improve your local ranking on Google.Google's own description of how local results are ordered: by relevance to the search, distance from the searcher, and prominence; that there is no way to request or pay for a better place in local results; and that a business with complete and accurate information is more likely to appear., so anyone selling a position is selling something they do not hold. A monthly invoice for what is really an afternoon of setup and a little upkeep afterwards, and any arrangement that leaves the agency holding your listing, your domain name or the site itself. And clinical copy about children's progress written by someone who has never run a session: the guidance Google publishes asks who made a page, how, and why, and weighs trust most heavily on health topics 13Ref 13Source (2026).Creating Helpful, Reliable, People-First Content.Google's self-assessment questions for content — who made it, how it was made, and why it exists, including whether automation produced it — and that trust is the most important of the four qualities it describes, with health and money topics weighted more heavily on it..
What's genuinely different here
Four practices wear the same license, and a searcher cannot tell
A sensory clinic with its own gym, a hand therapy suite inside an orthopaedic group, a home-visiting caseload for older adults, and a contract inside a school district are four different businesses to the person searching. The clinic has to prove the room: parking, what the space is like, what to bring, how long a first visit runs. The home-visiting practice has to prove its area instead, and holds the kind of listing whose street address stays out of sight by policy 2Ref 2Source (2026).Guidelines for representing your business on Google.Google's product policy for which address must be entered, when a business counts as one that serves an area rather than holding a storefront, and Google's instruction to hide the street address of a business that serves an area.. The school or facility contract is not a listing at all, because an ongoing service at a location you do not control is not eligible for one 1Ref 1Source (2026).Business eligibility and ownership guidelines.Google's eligibility rules for a Business Profile: a business must make in-person contact with customers during its stated hours; a post-office box or remote mailbox address is not permitted; an ongoing service, class or meeting at a location the business does not own or have authority to represent is ineligible; and only business owners or their authorised representatives may verify and manage the profile.. Most thin occupational therapy sites are thin because they are trying to be all four at once.
Birth to three has a free public route, and saying so wins the call
A parent searching about a two-year-old's delay may be entitled to something before they are entitled to you: the federal early-intervention programme serves children from birth through age two who have a disability or developmental delay, with their families, in natural settings, through a statewide system 14Ref 14Source (2026).IDEA Early Intervention Program for Infants and Toddlers with Disabilities (Part C).That the federal early-intervention programme under Part C serves children from birth through age two who have a disability or developmental delay, and their families, in natural environments, through a statewide system.. The honest page names that route, then says what you do that it does not — older children, a particular approach, an evaluation without a wait, a schedule the family picks, private pay or a plan. Pages that quietly compete with the public programme lose the parent who finds it a week later anyway, and that parent tells the other parents.
One spelling, including the letters after your name
The credential strings in this field multiply: the registered therapist, the doctorate, the master's, the assistant, the certified hand therapist, in any order a form will accept. Pick one written form of your name and credential and use it everywhere somebody might check: profile name, website footer, every listing, the federal record. Where a clinic employs several people, every clinician who holds a federal record holds their own, and the public registry is where its address and specialty classification can be read 4Ref 4Source (2026).NPI Registry (public provider record lookup). That the public registry is the free lookup of any clinician's federal provider record, including the specialty classification and the practice address as enumerated.. A practice page listing six therapists whose records point at three old employers reads to a machine as six unrelated people.
What a referral does not do is explain you
A referral puts your name in somebody's hand; it does not answer whether you are the right therapist. That is why the page that converts here is rarely the one about your philosophy of practice. It is the one that says what the first visit involves and how long it takes, what you will ask the family to do between visits, what equipment you lend or recommend, whether you write the letters a school or a plan will ask for, and what you do not do. Specifics that sound mundane to you are the whole decision for somebody who has already been sent to two places that were not a fit.
See how findable you are
Search the public NPPES registry for a clinician.
How Gale does this for you
Claim the record everything else copies
Anyone listed in the public federal registry already has a page waiting on Gale at no charge, occupational therapists included. Claim it, prove you are you, fill in the blanks, and one page from then on holds your name, your credential, your number and the address you practise at. That is the page the rest of your listings can be pointed back at.
Say what you treat in the words families use
Gale's coach looks at your page the way a parent or a discharge planner would, and tells you which answers are missing or too vague to act on: ages seen, settings worked in, what you treat, the plans you take, how long the wait runs. You get a completeness score and a list of edits. It says nothing about where you will show up in search, because it cannot know that.
Publish about the work, never about a child
Practice notes are short plain pieces that go out beside your byline: how an evaluation runs, what a family should bring, what a home visit looks like from the inside, why you asked about breakfast. No patient appears anywhere in them, so nobody has to authorise anything.
Make your authorship checkable
A clinician byline attaches your name, your license and your own number to anything you write or check over in Gale's health library. It leaves a trail somebody can follow back to a real licensed therapist, out of general material with no patient detail in it.
Keep your licensed states on the page
The states on your license go on the page and stay visible there. Somebody in a state you cannot lawfully treat learns it from reading rather than from a phone call, and the day you add a state nothing else drifts out of step.
See where you stand today
Hand the checker a name and a state and it finds that one clinician's record; claim and verify the record and a visibility report comes with it. It works one clinician at a time, keyed to an individual number, so a clinic with four therapists runs it four times.
