AI Overview Traffic in Search Console: What It Shows and What It Hides
Summary
Partly. Since August 31, 2026 every site's Search Console carries a Generative AI performance report that counts impressions of the site's pages inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. It shows no clicks and no queries; those stay inside the Performance report's Web search type, mixed with ordinary results. Read them together: AI impressions rising while Web clicks hold flat means the practice was shown and answered in place, a reading to confirm with the monthly prompt panel before acting on it.

Does Search Console separate AI Overview traffic from the rest?
Partly, and only since this summer. Search Console now carries a separate Generative AI performance report that counts how often a site's pages appeared inside AI Overviews and AI Mode. It counts impressions only. Clicks from those features are still folded into the ordinary Performance report under the Web search type, mixed with clicks from plain blue links, and no filter in that report pulls them apart.
Google announced the new report on June 3, 2026 and opened it to a subset of sites first. By August 31, 2026 it had reached every site worldwide 1Ref 1Hillel Maoz and Moshe Samet, Google Search Console (2026).Introducing Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console. The June 3, 2026 announcement of the Generative AI performance reports, what they show (impressions, pages, countries, devices, dates), the August 31, 2026 worldwide rollout, and that the data stays inside the overall Performance report.. The announcement lists what the report shows: impressions of the site's URLs in generative AI features on Search and Discover, the pages that appeared, the countries, the devices for Search results, and dates at hourly, daily, weekly and monthly granularity 1Ref 1Hillel Maoz and Moshe Samet, Google Search Console (2026).Introducing Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console. The June 3, 2026 announcement of the Generative AI performance reports, what they show (impressions, pages, countries, devices, dates), the August 31, 2026 worldwide rollout, and that the data stays inside the overall Performance report.. The same post says this data was already inside the overall Performance report and stays there.
The older documentation page on AI features says where that older counting lives. Sites appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the site's overall search traffic and reported in the Performance report within the Web search type, together with everything else 2Ref 2Google Search Central (2025).AI Features and Your Website. That traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is reported in the Performance report under the Web search type, combined with other search traffic and not broken out by feature.. So a practice has two readings of one event: a visibility count that isolates the AI features, and a click count that does not.
What each report counts
The two reports answer different questions. The Generative AI report answers how often the practice's pages were shown inside an AI answer, and on which pages. The Performance report answers how many searches produced an impression or a click for the site as a whole, with AI features and ordinary results added together and no way to subtract one from the other.
| What the owner wants to know | Generative AI performance report | Performance report, Web search type |
|---|---|---|
| Times a page appeared inside an AI Overview or AI Mode | Yes, as impressions | Inside the combined total, not separable |
| Clicks from inside an AI answer | Not shown | Counted, but only in the combined total |
| Which searches produced it | Not shown | Queries for all Web traffic, combined |
| Which pages appeared | Yes | Yes, combined |
| Country and device | Yes, device for Search results | Yes |
| Time grain | Hourly to monthly | The report's date range |
Google's guide to generative AI features says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and the site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console, before it can appear in those features at all 3Ref 3Google Search Central (2026).Google's Guide to Optimizing for Generative AI Features on Google Search. That a page must be indexed, snippet-eligible and the site included in Search generative AI features in Search Console to appear in those features; that the Generative AI performance report is Google's own visibility measure; and that no third-party tool has access to Google's internal ranking or AI systems.. A practice that has never verified its site in Search Console has no reading to take, and a site that has switched those features off has nothing to count.
The same guide warns off the substitutes. No third-party tool has access to Google's internal ranking or AI systems 3Ref 3Google Search Central (2026).Google's Guide to Optimizing for Generative AI Features on Google Search. That a page must be indexed, snippet-eligible and the site included in Search generative AI features in Search Console to appear in those features; that the Generative AI performance report is Google's own visibility measure; and that no third-party tool has access to Google's internal ranking or AI systems.. A dashboard that promises AI Overview clicks for a practice is estimating them from something other than Google's data, and the estimate should be read as one.
How to read impressions rising while clicks stay flat
Read it as shown and answered in place, and then go check. When the Generative AI report's impressions climb over a month while the Performance report's clicks hold flat, the plainest explanation is that an assistant showed the practice inside its answer and the searcher got what they came for without a visit. That is a hypothesis about the month. It becomes a reading once two ordinary explanations have been ruled out and the assistant itself has been asked.
The pattern has a measured basis outside any one site. Pew Research Center tracked 68,879 Google searches made by 900 U.S. adults in March 2025 4Ref 4Athena Chapekis and Anna Lieb, Pew Research Center (2025).Google users are less likely to click on links when an AI summary appears in the results.Pew's March 2025 browsing-data figures: 18 percent of searches produced an AI summary, clicks on a traditional result fell from 15 to 8 percent of visits when one appeared, links inside the summary drew clicks on 1 percent of visits, and sessions ended on the page more often (26 against 16 percent).. On result pages that carried an AI summary, users clicked a traditional link on 8 percent of visits, against 15 percent on pages without one 4Ref 4Athena Chapekis and Anna Lieb, Pew Research Center (2025).Google users are less likely to click on links when an AI summary appears in the results.Pew's March 2025 browsing-data figures: 18 percent of searches produced an AI summary, clicks on a traditional result fell from 15 to 8 percent of visits when one appeared, links inside the summary drew clicks on 1 percent of visits, and sessions ended on the page more often (26 against 16 percent).. Longer, question-shaped searches produced a summary far more often than one- or two-word ones. The study is one month of one panel's browsing, and it says nothing about any single site.
Google reads the same gap the other way round. Its guidance on AI experiences says clicks from pages carrying an AI Overview are higher quality, with users more likely to spend more time on the site, and it tells site owners to measure conversions as well as clicks 5Ref 5John Mueller, Google Search Relations (2025).Top ways to ensure your content performs well in Google's AI experiences on Search.Google's statements that clicks from pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, that sites should measure conversions and not only clicks, and that users of AI experiences ask longer, more specific and follow-up questions.. For a practice the conversion is a booking or a call, which is why the click line alone is a poor month-end score.
A flat click line has two ordinary causes, and the reading stands only once both are ruled out. One is the practice's own changes: an hours page rewritten, a fee table moved, a redirect added. The other is Google's. Google Search Central keeps a dated changelog of its Search documentation, and this year's entries include the May 15, 2026 guide to generative AI features and the May 7, 2026 date on which FAQ rich results stopped appearing in Search 6Ref 6Google Search Central (2026).Latest documentation updates. The dated Search Central changelog as the source for a practice's log of Google's announced changes, including the May 15, 2026 generative AI guide and the May 7, 2026 end of FAQ rich results.. Google's own advice on timing is to wait a few weeks before judging whether a change had an effect, since some changes show within hours and others take months 7Ref 7Google (2026).Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Starter Guide.Google's own advice to wait a few weeks before judging the effect of a change, because some changes show in hours and others take months..
The confirmation is the monthly prompt panel: ask the assistants the same fixed set of patient questions each month and write down whether the practice is named and what is said about it. If the panel names the practice for the questions those pages answer, and the click line is flat, the reading holds. If the panel does not name it, the impressions are counting something else, and the sheet says so.
Set up the export before you need it
Open Search Console today. Add the site as a Domain property if it is only a URL-prefix property. Open the Performance report, choose the Search results view, and export it with its Queries and Pages tabs. Then open the Generative AI performance report and export that as well. A month from now, do it again, and the practice owns its own history in a folder instead of borrowing Google's window on it.
The reading sheet is one row per month with three figures: impressions from the Generative AI report, clicks from the Performance report's Web search type, and the ratio between them. Beside the figures sit two more columns. One holds what changed on the practice's own site or listings that month, with dates. The other holds what Google announced, copied from the changelog with its dates 6Ref 6Google Search Central (2026).Latest documentation updates. The dated Search Central changelog as the source for a practice's log of Google's announced changes, including the May 15, 2026 generative AI guide and the May 7, 2026 end of FAQ rich results.. A swing is read against those two columns first and against the assistant second.
Keep the log of Google's changes in the same folder as the export, with the same month in the filename, so a person opening the folder in a year sees the swing and the announcement on one screen. A swing with nothing beside it in either column is the one worth a closer look. The first export is the baseline, and Google says the AI impressions were inside the totals before anyone looked 1Ref 1Hillel Maoz and Moshe Samet, Google Search Console (2026).Introducing Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console. The June 3, 2026 announcement of the Generative AI performance reports, what they show (impressions, pages, countries, devices, dates), the August 31, 2026 worldwide rollout, and that the data stays inside the overall Performance report.. The interesting row is the third.
Where the Search Console reading fits
It is one count among several, and it is the only one that comes from Google's own hand. Search Console says what Google's features showed and what they sent. What the other assistants sent shows up in the AI referral tally, read from the practice's own analytics or server logs, which is pixel-free measurement and needs no script on the page. What any of them said is a job for the prompt panel. The quarterly audit is where those counts are read together against the five sources the assistants draw on.
The address, hours and plans pages are the ones an Overview can answer in a sentence, so they are where a flat click line is most likely to mean shown-and-answered. The longer explainer pages are the ones most likely to meet the longer, more specific and follow-up questions Google says people ask in its AI experiences 5Ref 5John Mueller, Google Search Relations (2025).Top ways to ensure your content performs well in Google's AI experiences on Search.Google's statements that clicks from pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, that sites should measure conversions and not only clicks, and that users of AI experiences ask longer, more specific and follow-up questions., and a click on one of those is the click worth reading closely. Gale keeps a practice's gale.care page and its Q&A capsules answer-first and announces the page through IndexNow on the day it changes, so the sentence an Overview would quote exists in one place with a dated change behind it.
The reading shows whether the practice was shown, whether anyone came, and whether the two moved together in a month. What to change on the pages is the owner's call.
