What does a sleep tracker actually measure?

A wrist band or a ring does not sense sleep directly. It measures movement, and in newer devices your heart rate and its beat-to-beat variability, skin temperature, and breathing rate, then runs an algorithm that infers whether you were asleep and in which stage. The core method — motion as a proxy for sleep — is called actigraphy, and it is genuinely good at estimating when you drifted off and roughly how long you stayed asleep.
