How often should you get a skin check on immunosuppressants?
There is no single interval that fits everyone. How often you need a professional skin check depends on your specific medicines, how long you have been immunosuppressed, your skin type and sun history, and whether you have had skin cancer before. Your dermatologist or transplant team sets the schedule, and people at higher risk are generally seen more often than the once-in-a-while advice given to the average adult.
What is consistent is the pairing: scheduled professional exams plus your own regular self-checks between them. The professional exam is a full skin examination by a clinician who knows what to look for; the self-check is how most changes are actually caught first, because you see your skin far more often than any doctor does.

Who counts as immunosuppressed?
Immunosuppression is broader than organ transplant. It includes people on long-term systemic steroids or anti-rejection medicines, some who take immune-suppressing drugs for autoimmune or inflammatory diseases, people on certain cancer treatments, and those with conditions that weaken the immune system. The ABCDE signs, one by one:
- A — Asymmetry: one half does not match the other.
- B — Border: edges are irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined.
- C — Color: more than one color, or uneven shades of brown, black, red, white, or blue.
- D — Diameter: larger than about 6 millimeters, though melanomas can be smaller.
- E — Evolving: any change in size, shape, or color over weeks to months.
Go beyond moles, too. Check for any sore that will not heal, a spot that itches or bleeds, and a new growth that keeps enlarging. And check the places that get little sun: the soles, palms, between the toes, under the nails, and genital skin. In darker skin, cancers such as acral melanoma on the soles, palms, and nails are easy to miss, which is one reason skin cancer in skin of color is sometimes found later. A genital skin cancer is rare, but a spot on genitals that will not heal deserves the same attention as one anywhere else.
Photograph, track, and what to do if a spot changes
Between checks, the highest-value habit is photographing anything questionable and tracking it over time. Take a clear, well-lit photo with a ruler or coin for scale, note the date, and re-photograph in a few weeks. Comparing dated images turns a vague worry into an objective before-and-after, and change over time is what most often signals a problem worth evaluating.
