Nausea Remedies That Actually Work — and When to Seek Care
Most nausea from a stomach bug, motion sickness, or something you ate improves with rest, slow sips of clear fluids, and ginger as tea or candy. Over-the-counter antihistamines help motion sickness. Because nausea is a symptom rather than a diagnosis, persistent or severe nausea warrants evaluation by a clinician.

Find care →What are the most effective non-medication approaches?
Several non-medication strategies have real evidence behind them:
Rest and position. Lying down in a cool, quiet, dimly lit room helps — especially for nausea from motion or an inner-ear disturbance. Propping your head up slightly (rather than lying completely flat) can reduce a reflux component.
Ginger. Ginger tea, ginger ale made with real ginger, ginger candies, or ginger capsules have consistent evidence across multiple causes of nausea — including pregnancy, post-operative recovery, and chemotherapy-related nausea 1Ref 1American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (2023).Morning Sickness: Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy (Patient FAQ).Ginger and P6 acupressure as first-line approaches for pregnancy nausea; hyperemesis gravidarum requiring medical management. It is one of the most studied natural approaches to this symptom.
Acupressure. Firm pressure on the P6 (Neiguan) point on the inner wrist — applied with two fingers or a wristband — has moderate evidence for reducing nausea, particularly for motion sickness and pregnancy-related nausea.
Small sips of clear fluid. Ice chips, small sips of water, diluted electrolyte drinks, or clear broth help prevent dehydration without overwhelming a sensitive stomach. Large amounts of liquid at once often worsen nausea.
Bland food when tolerated. Plain crackers, toast, plain rice, or bananas are gentle when your stomach starts to settle.
Fresh air and cool temperature. A cool compress on the forehead or stepping outside briefly can help, especially when nausea is linked to heat or anxiety.
Which over-the-counter medications help?
A pharmacist is the best guide for matching the product to your situation.
Antihistamines (dimenhydrinate, meclizine). Effective for motion sickness and vestibular-related nausea. Most cause drowsiness. Not recommended during pregnancy without clinician guidance.
Bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol). Can ease nausea tied to GI upset or a food-related illness. Should be avoided in children and teenagers (aspirin-containing products carry a risk of Reye's syndrome), during pregnancy, and by people taking blood thinners.
Antacids. Helpful when nausea has a reflux or acid component.
Always read the label, check for drug interactions, and ask your pharmacist if you take other medications.
What about nausea during pregnancy?
Morning sickness — which can happen at any time of day — affects the majority of pregnant people, typically in the first trimester 2Ref 2American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (2023).Morning Sickness: Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy (Patient FAQ).Prevalence of morning sickness in pregnancy and guidance on when to seek obstetric care for hyperemesis gravidarum. Ginger and the P6 acupressure wristband are first-line options with favorable safety profiles. Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is another well-studied choice considered generally safe in pregnancy, though dosing should be guided by your obstetrician or midwife.
Hyperemesis gravidarum is a severe form of pregnancy nausea and vomiting that requires medical management. If you cannot keep food or fluids down, or you are losing weight, contact your obstetric provider promptly 2Ref 2American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (2023).Morning Sickness: Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy (Patient FAQ).Prevalence of morning sickness in pregnancy and guidance on when to seek obstetric care for hyperemesis gravidarum.
What causes nausea in the first place?
Nausea is a symptom that can arise from many different sources:
- Viral gastroenteritis (stomach bug) — nausea often comes with vomiting, diarrhea, and low-grade fever after exposure to a sick contact
- Food-related illness or intolerance — onset typically within hours of a specific meal
- Motion sickness or inner-ear disturbance — clearly tied to movement or positional change
- Pregnancy — should be considered in anyone who could be pregnant
- Medication side effects — many medications list nausea prominently, including opioids, antibiotics, metformin, and SSRIs
- Anxiety or stress — the gut and brain are closely connected; nausea before stressful events is a recognized pattern
- Gastroparesis — delayed stomach emptying, particularly in people with long-standing diabetes, can cause persistent nausea 3Ref 3Camilleri M, Kuo B, Nguyen L, Vaughn VM, Petrey J, Greer K, Yadlapati R, Abell TL (2022).ACG Clinical Guideline: Gastroparesis.Gastroparesis as a cause of persistent nausea, particularly in people with long-standing diabetes, and the need for clinical evaluation
When should you contact a clinician?
Most garden-variety nausea resolves on its own with rest and fluids. Reach out to a clinician if:
- Nausea has persisted more than 48 hours without improvement
- It keeps coming back over days or weeks without a clear cause
- You cannot keep any fluids down and are showing signs of dehydration: no urination for 8 or more hours, very dry mouth, or dizziness when standing
- You are pregnant and cannot maintain hydration or are losing weight
- Any of the warning signs listed below apply
A clinician can identify the cause and, when needed, prescribe prescription anti-nausea medications that are more effective than over-the-counter options. Persistent nausea — even without vomiting — can signal conditions ranging from gastroparesis to kidney disease to medication effects, and getting to the root cause matters for lasting relief 3Ref 3Camilleri M, Kuo B, Nguyen L, Vaughn VM, Petrey J, Greer K, Yadlapati R, Abell TL (2022).ACG Clinical Guideline: Gastroparesis.Gastroparesis as a cause of persistent nausea, particularly in people with long-standing diabetes, and the need for clinical evaluation.
Common questions
Does ginger actually work for nausea?
Ginger has consistent evidence across several types of nausea — including pregnancy-related, post-operative, and chemotherapy-induced. It can be used as tea, capsules, candies, or real-ginger ginger ale. It is one of the better-studied natural remedies for this symptom.
Is it safe to take Pepto-Bismol for nausea?
Bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol) can help with nausea from GI upset, but it should not be given to children or teenagers, used during pregnancy, or taken alongside blood thinners. Ask a pharmacist if you have any uncertainty about interactions.
How long should nausea last before seeing a doctor?
If nausea has not improved after 48 hours, is coming back repeatedly without explanation, or is preventing you from keeping fluids down, it is worth contacting a clinician. Sooner if you are pregnant, elderly, very young, or have kidney disease.
Can anxiety cause nausea?
Yes. The gut and brain are tightly connected through the nervous system. Nausea before stressful events, during high-anxiety periods, and as part of a broader anxiety pattern is common and real.
What does it mean if nausea keeps coming back?
Recurring nausea without a clear trigger warrants a clinician evaluation. It can reflect gastroparesis, chronic acid reflux, a medication effect, or other digestive and systemic conditions. A clinical history, examination, and sometimes testing are needed to sort this out.
