The one number Kansas does not have

Start with an absence, because it explains why the figures you find online disagree with each other. The 2024 Cost of Care Survey prices five things: homemaker services, home health aide, adult day health care, assisted living, and nursing home rooms 1. Memory care is not on that list, in Kansas or anywhere. No one surveys it, so no one can report its median.

A Kansas memory care median does not exist. Every published one is an estimate presented as data.

The reason is structural rather than sloppy. Memory care is rarely its own business. It is generally a secured wing or a purpose-built household attached to a community that also sells assisted living, and it is priced off that building's base rent plus a dementia-care premium the building sets for itself. The premium is a commercial decision, not a market rate, which is exactly why it never appears in a survey.

What follows, then, is not a made-up average. It is the set of Kansas figures that do exist, arranged so that the quote a Kansas community hands you becomes readable.

Kansas is the middle state for assisted living

Kansas assisted living runs $71,400 a year — $5,950 a month, about $196 a day — and ranks 26th out of the 50 states and the District of Columbia 1. With 51 places ranked, 26th is the exact centre. It means the national conversation about assisted living pricing applies to Kansas almost unmodified, and a Kansas family reading a national article about base rents and care levels is reading something close to their own reality.

Two pieces of fine print still apply. The median is measured on a private, one-bedroom apartment across twelve months of care 1, while memory care is often sold as a studio or a shared room — so the unit under the median may not be the unit on the tour. That is roughly a $10,000-a-year gap in each direction, or about $800 a month, for a border that may be twenty minutes away from a Kansas City-area family. Over a four-year illness the difference is in the tens of thousands.

This is not a recommendation to move a parent across a state line, and it should not be read as one. Distance from the person who visits most is a real cost that never shows on a rate sheet, and a resident with dementia who sees family twice a week in a pricier building is often better served than one who sees them monthly in a cheaper one. Medicaid rules, when the money eventually runs out, are also set state by state — moving states means changing programmes mid-illness.

But a Kansas family should at least know the gap exists, because no Kansas community will mention it.

That does not make it worthless. Adult day is not simply cheaper supervision — it is structured social contact, a schedule, and hours in which a caregiver can hold a job or sleep. Those are not things a rate sheet prices. But a Kansas family who has been told adult day is the obvious economical bridge should check the arithmetic against their own state's number rather than the national one, because in Kansas the gap between bridging and moving is far narrower than the advice assumes.

This matters for a decision families face late and badly. When memory care can no longer hold a person — when the transfers need two people, or the medical needs outgrow what the building is licensed for — the move to skilled nursing in Kansas is a smaller financial shock than the national numbers would lead anyone to brace for. Kansas is a state where assisted living is average and the next level up is cheap, which is close to the inverse of how families are taught to plan.

Kansas home care is cheap, so the break-even comes late

Those rows are arithmetic on the survey's Kansas figures 1, not a surveyed break-even. They compare against an assisted living median rather than a memory care rate, so the real crossover for dementia sits higher still, and they ignore the mortgage, taxes, utilities and food that continue at home.

The caveat that matters most is that dementia is not billed by the task. Awake-hours coverage means paid presence for every hour the person is up and moving, rather than help with a list of chores. A Kansas family can buy a genuinely useful 43 hours a week — more than most states get for the price — but somebody is still awake for the other 125, and that somebody is usually unpaid and related. The break-even hour count is a budget line. It is not a measure of what a household can survive.

What a Kansas quote leaves out

  • What the level excludes. Incontinence supplies, a second person for transfers, escorting to meals, and medication administration are frequently separate lines.
  • The community fee. A one-time, usually non-refundable move-in charge, often a month of rent or more.
  • Three years of actual increases. Not the policy — the real numbers. Assisted living rose 10% nationally in the 2024 survey year 2.
  • The re-assessment trigger. Whether a fall, a hospital stay, or a new behaviour re-opens the assessment mid-year, and the largest mid-year increase issued last year.
  • The overnight staffing ratio. The 3am number, not the 2pm one.
  • The discharge terms. What level of need the building cannot keep. Every memory care has a ceiling, and a crisis is the worst moment to discover where it is.

Paying past the savings
