What's the Actual Melanoma Risk?
For the large majority of congenital nevi, which are small to medium, the added lifetime melanoma risk compared with the general population is modest, and most children with one never develop a problem related to it. The concern concentrates disproportionately in the rare giant nevi, which is exactly why those get more intensive, specialist-led follow-up.

Sun Protection for a Baby With a Congenital Nevus
Sun protection for a congenital nevus is really just an extension of the sun care already recommended for any infant's skin — shade, protective clothing, and timing outdoor time away from the strongest midday sun. There is no special sunscreen or product made specifically for moles.
For infants under six months, standard guidance favors shade clothing under 6 months and physical coverage over sunscreen for most of the body, which naturally protects a congenital nevus along with the rest of the skin. Once a baby is old enough for sunscreen, applying it consistently to any exposed nevus is a reasonable habit to build early.
How This Differs From a Mole That Appears Later
A congenital nevus present at birth is evaluated on a different track than the new moles in childhood that show up over the following years, since new, acquired moles are extremely common in growing children and are generally considered a normal part of development. Mixing the two up in conversation with a clinician can muddy an otherwise straightforward evaluation.
A pink dome-shaped bump that appears later in childhood, sometimes diagnosed as a Spitz nevus, is yet another distinct and usually benign entity, separate from both congenital nevi and typical acquired moles. Likewise, a raised, red infantile hemangioma — sometimes called the strawberry mark — looks and behaves nothing like a pigmented congenital nevus, despite both being present from early infancy; distinguishing between transient newborn skin bumps like milia and an actual congenital nevus is usually straightforward once a clinician has looked, even when it's confusing from a photo alone.

What to Watch For in a Congenital Nevus
