Can You Get a Sports Physical at Urgent Care? Yes — Here Is What to Know

Yes — most urgent care clinics can perform a standard sports physical. Clinicians there review medical history, complete the basic physical exam, and sign your school's athletic association form. Urgent care visits are often faster than primary care appointments near sports season. Call ahead to confirm availability and bring the correct school form.

What does a sports physical actually evaluate?

The pre-participation physical evaluation (PPE) — the formal name for a sports physical — was updated in its 5th edition in 2019, developed jointly by six major medical organizations including the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) 12. Its primary goals are to screen for conditions that could make sports participation unsafe, especially cardiovascular risk, and to identify musculoskeletal injuries that have not fully healed.

A standard PPE includes: - Medical and family history review (especially for cardiac events and sudden cardiac death in young relatives) - Height, weight, blood pressure, and pulse - Cardiovascular exam — listening for murmurs or irregular rhythms - Musculoskeletal exam — range of motion, prior injury assessment - Vision screening - Mental health screening — the 5th edition added formal questions about depression and anxiety 1

An urgent care clinician can complete all of these components.

What can urgent care do — and what it cannot?

Most urgent care centers can: - Review your medical and family history - Perform the standard physical exam: heart, lungs, blood pressure, vision, musculoskeletal - Complete and sign your school's athletic association form - Clear you for participation or flag a condition that needs follow-up

What urgent care may not be able to do: - Access your full primary care medical history - Manage a newly identified condition or refer to a specialist as seamlessly as your regular doctor - Serve as ongoing care for a chronic condition uncovered during the exam

The 5th edition PPE monograph recommends the evaluation occur in the athlete's primary care setting when possible 2, but it explicitly acknowledges that urgent care and group physicals remain a practical option for many athletes.

When is urgent care a good choice for a sports physical?

Urgent care is an excellent option when: - You cannot get a timely appointment with your primary care doctor - The season is starting soon and you need it done quickly - The athlete is generally healthy with no complex medical history - Cost is a consideration — urgent care often has flat-rate cash prices lower than a doctor's office visit

Many urgent care chains promote sports physicals during late summer and sometimes offer them at reduced cost as a community service.

When should I go to primary care instead?

Your regular doctor is the better choice when 12: - The athlete has a known heart condition, structural cardiac abnormality, or family history of sudden cardiac death in a young person - There is a history of concussion or repeated injuries the provider should evaluate in context - The athlete has asthma, diabetes, or other conditions actively managed by that clinician - A previous physical flagged a concern that has not been followed up

In these situations, a clinician who knows the full history can make a more informed clearance decision.

How do I make the urgent care visit go smoothly?

1. Call ahead. Not every urgent care location performs sports physicals — confirm before you go. 2. Bring the correct form. State athletic associations almost always require a specific form. Download it from your school's athletic department website before the visit. The clinic may not have your state's form. 3. Bring your medical history. Since the urgent care provider may not have your records, bring a summary: current medications, allergies, prior surgeries, hospitalizations, and any managed conditions. 4. Bring immunization records if your sport or school requires them. 5. Go in the morning or on a weekday. Volumes are typically lower, so you will usually wait less.

Common questions

Do I need an appointment for a sports physical at urgent care?

Most urgent care clinics are walk-in. Call ahead to confirm they offer sports physicals and have a clinician available — some locations have limited hours for this service.

Will the urgent care clinic have my state's athletic association form?

Not always. Download your school's required form from the athletic department website and bring it with you.

Is a sports physical at urgent care covered by insurance?

Coverage varies. Urgent care sports physicals may be billed differently than a preventive visit at a primary care office. Check with your insurer or ask the clinic how the visit will be coded before you go.

When urgent care is not the right setting

  • A known heart condition, structural cardiac abnormality, or family history of sudden cardiac death in a young person — these warrant evaluation by a primary care provider or cardiologist, not a walk-in clinic
  • A prior physical that flagged a concern never followed up — resolve that first before proceeding to any clearance exam

This article provides general guidance on obtaining a sports physical and is not a substitute for medical evaluation by a licensed clinician. If the athlete has a known heart condition or complex chronic condition, consult a primary care provider for clearance guidance.
