Asperger's Syndrome: Where It Fits in the Autism Spectrum Today
Asperger's is no longer a separate diagnosis; it was merged into autism spectrum disorder. Many adults still use the term, and it remains a valid part of how they describe themselves.

Find care →What Asperger's described
Asperger's syndrome historically named a profile of autistic differences, challenges with back-and-forth social communication, deep and focused interests, and a preference for routine, in people who did not have a general delay in language or learning. Autism itself is a neurological and developmental condition affecting social communication, behavior, and learning, with signs usually appearing in the first two years of life 1Ref 1National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) (2024).Autism Spectrum Disorder.ASD is a neurological and developmental disorder whose signs usually appear in the first two years of life, affecting social communication, behavior, and learning.. The features once labeled Asperger's sit squarely within that description; the term simply marked one part of a wider range.
Why it is no longer a separate diagnosis
Diagnostic systems were revised so that the various subtypes, including Asperger's, were consolidated into a single category: autism spectrum disorder. The reasoning was that the boundaries between subtypes were not reliable, the same person could be labeled differently by different clinicians, and a spectrum framing better captures the wide variation among autistic people. So today, rather than diagnosing Asperger's, clinicians diagnose autism spectrum disorder and then describe the individual's profile and how much support they need in specific areas. Autism is common, identified in roughly 1 in 36 U.S. 8-year-olds in recent surveillance 2Ref 2Maenner MJ, Warren Z, Williams AR, et al.; ADDM Network (2023).Prevalence and Characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder Among Children Aged 8 Years — Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network, 11 Sites, United States, 2020.In 2020, an estimated 1 in 36 US 8-year-olds had autism spectrum disorder..
What this means if you have the older label
If you were diagnosed with Asperger's years ago, that diagnosis is not invalidated, your records and your sense of identity remain meaningful. Many adults continue to use the word because it describes their experience and community. For practical purposes, such as accessing services today, the current term is autism spectrum disorder, and a clinician can document how the older label maps onto it. The shift is about language and classification, not about who you are.
Seeking an evaluation as an adult
Adults sometimes seek evaluation after recognizing lifelong patterns in social communication, sensory sensitivity, or focused interests. While autism characteristics are often detectable in early childhood, they are not always identified then, and globally about 1 in 127 people were estimated to have autism in 2021 3Ref 3World Health Organization (WHO) (2025).Autism — Fact Sheet.About 1 in 127 people had autism in 2021, characteristics are often detectable in early childhood, and research shows no causal link between vaccines (including MMR) and autism.. A clinician evaluating an adult takes a developmental history, reviews current functioning, and describes strengths alongside support needs. The same evidence base also makes one thing clear: extensive research shows no causal link between vaccines, including MMR, and autism 3Ref 3World Health Organization (WHO) (2025).Autism — Fact Sheet.About 1 in 127 people had autism in 2021, characteristics are often detectable in early childhood, and research shows no causal link between vaccines (including MMR) and autism..
When a clinician helps
A clinician helps translate a question about labels into something useful: an accurate, individualized picture. A psychologist or psychiatrist experienced in autism can use structured assessment to confirm whether autism spectrum disorder fits and to map your specific strengths and support needs, drawing on a multidisciplinary perspective when helpful 4Ref 4Volkmar F, Siegel M, Woodbury-Smith M, King B, McCracken J, State M; AACAP Committee on Quality Issues (2014).Practice Parameter for the Assessment and Treatment of Children and Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder.AACAP recommends multidisciplinary assessment when ASD is suspected.. They can rule out or recognize co-occurring conditions, such as anxiety or attention difficulties, that often travel alongside autistic traits and shape day-to-day life. They can connect you to evidence-based supports and accommodations, and they can help you navigate work, relationships, and self-advocacy with a clear understanding of how you are wired rather than a half-remembered older term.
Common questions
Is Asperger's still an official diagnosis?
No. It was merged into autism spectrum disorder. Clinicians today diagnose autism spectrum disorder and then describe the person's specific profile and support needs.
Can I still call myself 'Aspie' or say I have Asperger's?
Yes. Many people keep using the term because it describes their experience and community. For current services and records, the clinical term is autism spectrum disorder, but your self-description is yours.
I think I might be autistic as an adult. Where do I start?
A psychologist or psychiatrist experienced in autism can take a developmental history, assess current functioning, and describe your strengths and support needs. Recognizing lifelong patterns is a common and valid reason to seek evaluation.
