Functioning on the outside, gray on the inside

Save

It's been about four months of the same gray. I'm 25. From the outside I'm functioning, which makes me feel like a liar. I asked an AI, sideways, whether feeling nothing counts as depression or if I'm just lazy, then saw therapy prices and closed all the tabs.

What this can feel like

It's been about four months of the same gray. I'm 25. I go to work, I answer the messages, I say the right things in standups, and then I come home and lie on the floor because the bed feels too far and the floor is right there. Everything takes the energy of ten things. Showering is a whole negotiation. I stopped texting people back, not because I'm mad, just because forming the words feels like lifting something heavy. The strange part is that from the outside I'm functioning, which somehow makes me feel like a liar. I finally asked an AI, kind of sideways, whether feeling nothing counts as depression or if I'm just lazy and dramatic. It didn't laugh at me, which I half expected. It mentioned teletherapy and I actually looked some up, but then I saw the prices and closed all the tabs. As a Black nonbinary person I also just don't want to spend the first three sessions explaining myself before we even get to the part that actually hurts. I keep telling myself I'll deal with it when I have more energy, which is obviously the whole joke.

What's a first step I can take?

ask how many weeks the gray has lasted ask what a genuinely restful day would look like now

Common questions

Yes. So-called high-functioning depression is real: you keep up on the outside while everything feels heavy and you pull away from people. Being able to push through doesn't cancel out how bad it feels underneath.

You can filter directories for affirming or identity-specific providers, and many list this on their profiles. Sliding-scale and community clinics often have affirming clinicians too, and it's fair to ask about fit in a first free consult.

Shrink the step until it's almost nothing: one message, one online screening, one warmline call. Let that count as the whole task for today.
